GM Steps Aside for Annapolis Blues FC;  Will Continue on as Senior Advisor and Special Projects Liaison with the Club

by Steven Hooper on December 5, 2025 at 7:35 pm

ANNAPOLIS, MD  ( Dec. 5 2025) —    Fred Matthes, the first General Manager and the first public hire in the history of Annapolis Blues steps aside into an advisory role, the team announced Friday. Matthes will remain active with the Club, and will continue on working with ownership and on special projects that will come up in the future with both the USL2 and USLW League teams in the role of Senior Advisor – Special Projects Liaison.  He will also take on a small, minority ownership in the Club in the future.  Matthes, who also runs a Soccer Consulting business, FM Professional Soccer Consulting,  played a pivotal role during  Annapolis Blues FC’s first three seasons of existence. He was hired in the late Summer of 2022, and during his tenure the franchise established NPSL, USL2 & USLW League records for the highest-attended matches in league history (11,171 in June 2024 in NPSL; 12,853 in USL2 & 7,298 in USLW in May 2025), and continuously matched high average attendance levels with professional Soccer teams all over the country at leagues two and three levels above them. On the pitch, Matthes saw two regular season NPSL Championships and one Conference Championship for the Men’s team and one regular season Championship for the Women’s team in their first year in USLW.  His other accomplishments off the pitch, included arranging a Training Center host location, scheduling all Team transportation, setting up the Ticketing platforms, creating the home and away schedules for matches while working with League administration for USL2/USLW and NPSL, working with a full-time staff based in Annapolis handling Sponsorship, Ticketing, Marketing, Broadcast, Operations, and heading up several Community projects that led the Club to be received favorably throughout the Chesapeake Region.  “I’m incredibly proud of what we have built at Annapolis Blues FC, both on and off the pitch” Matthes said in a release issued by the team. “In just three years, we made history at the lower divisions in American Soccer by taking the ideas of Opportunity, Community and Equality and blending them all into an organization that represents Annapolis so well, and I’m incredibly grateful to our ownership group, led by Michael Hitchcock, our professional staff in all areas, our coaches & players, the people at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and most importantly, our fans, whose passion and tremendous support from day one have helped to make the Blues so iconic in the Annapolis area and beyond.” “I am so impressed by our younger executives, led by my Assistant General Manager, Steven Hooper, who never backed down from any challenges and never accepted the premise as a Club that just because we were considered lower division Soccer, that we couldn’t have a professional level product both on and off the pitch, and throughout the community that could also be envied nationwide.”   From Community Outreach, led by Devin Pugh, that gave us a year-round presence everywhere at events and continually working with local charities and organizations to our season ticket and new Membership initiatives led by Kaitlyn McComb, we have always been visible and accessible to all of our fans and supporters, no matter when.” also adding, “Our Sponsorship levels are second to none at this level led by Steven and assisted by Luke Mueller, and our Team Merchandise, as handled by Kyle Cullen, has been a true hit and worn and seen by people everywhere, including on television on Soccer programs like CBS Golazo !” … “And our “Navy of Interns”, that join us each season that take on.a multitude of tasks with tireless enthusiasm and spirit throughout the season can always be counted on.  With the advent of our Women’s team, and an American Soccer icon in Jim Gabarra joining us, one of those interns, Brooke Lewis, stepped up to take on multiple duties for the Team and Club.”   At the Stadium, Phil Wrye, a veteran of almost 30 years in Minor League Baseball, led the Operations team at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to assist with working with Bill Givens, Jon Gren, Damisi Price, and the entire team from the Naval Academy Athletic Association.” While having a background in several sports front offices, from the NBA’s Washington Bullets, to almost two decades with D.C. United where he met Hitchcock, and where Matthes began at the outset of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1995 after being a Volunteer with the 1994 World Cup in Washington, DC. Matthes had also helped to build other USL and NWSL Clubs such as Sacramento Republic FC, New Mexico United, Fresno FC, Washington Freedom and Spirit from the outset.  He also worked with North Carolina FC, North Carolina Courage, Virginia Beach City FC and consulted to several other Soccer clubs and Soccer business entities.  “When Hitch first spoke to me back in 2022, I wasn’t really looking to take on another start up Club, but as talks continued on, he eventually said, “What I really need is an experienced General Manager, one that has done this before …”  “Hitch can be pretty persuasive”, claimed Matthes, and the role that was initially going to be for just a year, lasted three successful seasons.  On the pitch, the Blues have been led by Colin Herriot, now in his 4th season coming up in 2026, and was named as NPSL Coach of the Year in 2023, the Blues’ Inaugural Season, when they won the Mid-Atlantic Regular season Championship in 2023 & 2024, and by Ashly Kennedy on the Women’s side since 2025, where she immediately took the team to a Mid-Atlantic Championship and Conference Final and was named USLW Coach of the Year. “Working with Colin and Ashly has been a truly invigorating experience for me on the Team-side of the Club, and getting to know Colin from Year One as we began, he really set the tone for what the Annapolis Blues FC culture would ultimately become based around … A professional atmosphere in all ways, and making the players proud to put on the shirt and play their hearts out for the Club, and for the Fans, and the City of Annapolis at all times.”  I have been so proud to also see the development of all of the players that have grasped that ‘Opportunity’ to be seen at higher levels and make the most out of it”   Annapolis Blues FC has already placed players on to MLS and USL Women’s Premier League rosters in their short history.   Matthes plans to continue staying active and involved with the Club beyond his new role, and will be a regular at Blues match Tailgates, in the stands, and talking with fans in Annapolis. “As I have been saying, I’m not really stepping down, just stepping aside, and look forward to watching Steven and Jim take the reins from here to continue building upon what we have accomplished thus far with this very special Soccer Club in the American Soccer Pyramid … Let’s Go Blues !”

Battle of The Blues: Annapolis’ Women Remain Undefeated Following a Strong 3-0 Road WinMaking the three-hour trip down I-95, the Annapolis Blues Women doubled its success, bringing home a win against the Charlottesville Blues (CBFC) to sit atop the Eastern Conference Chesapeake Division.Annapolis began the match on the front foot, releasing an unrelenting press on CBFC that would last the entire night. Throughout the first 20 minutes, Charlottesville attempted to press equally, resulting in neither side being able to put its attacking stamp on the match quite yet. Play was halted after 23 minutes for a hydration break.Coming out of the break, Annapolis stepped into another gear. The first dangerous opportunity of the half came in the 30th minute. A poor giveaway by the Charlottesville center back saw Kelsey Smith make a crucial interception, leaving her one-on-one with CBFC keeper Keely Thomas. Smith attempted to round Thomas but was pushed wide. She kept the play alive by crossing it into the box, finding the feet of Baylee Desmit. The ball then made its way through the top of the box and out wide to Sabba Haghgoo, who’s shot sailed off the crossbar and went out for a corner.Just four minutes later, the deadlock was broken. The ever-threatening Haghgoo received a ball on the right flank with her back to defender. Standing strong, she played the ball into middle of field, finding the feet of Sarah Martin. Martin, full of confidence, fired a shot from 30 yards out that bounced in front of the diving Thomas, over her hands, and into the back of the net.Amanda Graziano doubled the lead shortly after, in the most stunning of ways. Haghgoo received the ball on the right wing and quickly distributed to Graziano in the center of the pitch. Making her first start of the season, she drove towards the goal with pure ambition. The 2022 All-Patriot League Second Team selection cut back, beat both defenders, and unleashed a shot from roughly 25 yards out that nestled perfectly into the top right corner.Annapolis would enter the half up 2-0, not allowing a single shot on target from its opponent through the first 45.Delaney DeMartino, a second half substitute, started the attack that would lead to a third goal after stripping her attacker of the ball. The Potomac, MD native made a quick pass to Haghgoo in the middle of the field, who drove into the attacking half. She then found Baylee DeSmit who, in similar fashion to Graziano’s goal, let go of a wonder-shot that beat Thomas, curling into the top right corner of the net. With another hydration break given around the 72nd minute mark, the remainder of the second half saw Annapolis maintain the lion’s share of possession, not allowing any attacking chances from CBFC. Head Coach Ashly Kennedy made several changes throughout the half, allowing players to gain valuable minutes and garner more USL W League experience. The women in light blue remained composed throughout all 90 minutes of play, coming away with a strong 3-0 win on the road. Having now tallied six goals through three games, the Blueshave shared the goal-scoring accolades, seeing six different goal scorers thus far. Haghgoo leads the team with four points, coming from one goal and three assists.Looking to set attendance records in both the USL W and USL 2 leagues, the women and men return to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on May 31st. The men will open play, taking on Christos FC at 5:00 pm, followed by the women at 7:30 pm who will face off against RichmondWritten by Tyler Ingle

Last Minute Goal Gives Annapolis Blues All Three Points in its Inaugural USL 2 Game

Last Minute Goal Gives Annapolis Blues All Three Points in its Inaugural USL 2 Game

Last Minute Goal Gives Annapolis Blues All Three Points in its Inaugural USL 2 GameNew league. Who dis?Annapolis Blues. That’s who- and that’s exactly what Charlottesville Blues FC (CBFC) learned on Saturday as Naptown’s team went head-to-head with the undefeated Virginia side. After two years of success in the NPSL, the Annapolis Blues opened its USL League 2 campaign on a brisk May night. The boys in blue were in no rush, calmly maintaining the lion’s share of possession throughout the match.Charlottesville isolated its press to the outside backs, allowing Annapolis’ center backs and holding midfielders plenty of time on the ball. On the attacking front, Charlottesville attempted to generate opportunities from counter attacks, proving critical in opening the scoring.Intercepting a pass from defender Ian Webb-Johnson, CBFC forward Graham Dougald distributed the ball to Zsombor Pall who slipped a through ball into Mouhamed Tucker on the left wing. Tucker’s cross from the edge of the box nearly found the head of Pall, but bounced inside the six-yard box and took a deflection off Taku Takahashi’s knee. Leading to a scramble inside the box, Sulaiman Abdul-Mateen found the back of the net, beating Emigdio Tormo Lopez with a simple one-touch finish on the goal line.Returning to Annapolis for his second season, Ben Madore would make his mark on the scoresheet. In an attempt to play out of the back, Charlottesville Blues goalkeeper Colin Gallagher played a loose pass into the midfield that was quickly intercepted by Brady Geho. The UMBC forward left his defender in the dust with a smooth ball roll and distributed a short pass to Madore. Madore took a touch, cut inside and split two defenders before releasing a snap shot into the bottom left corner, leveling things up for Annapolis.Following two minutes of stoppage time, the sides entered the half at 1-1, leaving all to play for in the second 45. Annapolis recorded four shots with two on target, while CBFC tallied two shots with only one on target.Charlottesville created the first attacking chance in the second half, coming from Pall in the 54th minute. Tucker charged into the box on the left wing, driving toward the endline in going toe-to-toe with right back Matty Helfrich. Managing to get his cross off at the last minute, his ball was met by Pall’s darting header that was pushed away by a sprawling Lopez, who pawed away the go-ahead attempt with a diving save to his left.Geho received a pass on the right flank in the 65th minute. Driving towards goal, Geho blew past his defender and fired off a shot that soared just above the bar and went out for a goal kick, giving Annapolis its first attacking opportunity of the half.Proving to be a tactical mastermind again and again, Head Coach Colin Herriot’s second-half substitute Matthew Lenert secured all three points for Annapolis in the dying embers of the match. With the ball bouncing around the middle of the pitch, Lenert found himself on the end of a first-time pass that broke the CBFC midfield line. Taking it in stride, the College of Charleston forward didn’t miss a beat as he darted towards the 18-yard box. Unleashing a shot from the middle-right side of the pitch, he found the bottom left corner with an impressive finish, leaving Gallagher with no chance.Looking to set attendance records in both the USL 2 and USL W leagues, the men and women return to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on May 31st. The men will open play, taking on Christos FC at 5:00 pm, followed by the women at 7:30 pm who will face off against Richmond Ivy.First match of the year and in usl 2 for annapolis, Charlottesville 1-1 with 4 ptsWritten by Tyler Ingle
